Urban Mapping design and creation of a basemap
Mapping, Data Collection, GIS

City growth has caused climate change, but that growth is also what’s going to get us out of it - Matthew Kahn, UCLA economist

For our interactive map project, we decided to create an urban detailed basemap. So we used the OpenStreetMap database as a data source, filtered it and designed the urban data layers using QGIS App.
The main difficulty of this task was that the OSM data was not perfect since the roads may be duplicated and not continuous, so we ran some topology validations on the data, merged meshes of same type entities under one single object and smoothed the connections.

The layers design was made so the buildings or the roads can be easily recognized even if they share the same color schema thanks to the dark background.
